John Ogilvie was born 26th May 1805 in the parish Mains and Strathmartine to parents William Ogilvie and Agnes Philp.

Although I cannot trace a marriage record, I know John married (or claimed to be married to) Agnes Stewart Edward around 1825-26. To make things even harder to track, Agnes mainly went by the name Stewart Edward.
On 15th March 1826, John and Agnes had their first son, James Ogilvie (my 3rd great grandfather) in Errol, Perthshire. A daughter, Agnes Ogilvie, followed on 7th February 1828 in Inverarity, Forfar. Then another son, John Ogilvie, on 18th December 1829 also in Inverarity, Forfar. David Ogilvie in about 1834 and lastly (that I know of) William Ogilvie in about 1837 in Murroes, Forfar.
The first census available is 1841. The are listed as living at Windy Mill in the Parish of Murroes, Forfar. John is listed as a agricultural labourer. He is living with Agnes and his children – John, William, David and Agnes.
On the 1851 census John and Agnes are listed as living at Craighill Den Cottar Houses in the parish of Mains and Strathmartine with two of their children – Agnes and William. John is again listed as a agricultural labourer.
On the 1861 census they are listed as living at Woee’s Shop in the parish of Tealing with their son William and two grand-daughters – Agnes Law, age 8 and Agnes Mathie, age 1 (Agnes Mathie appears to be the child of John’s daughter, Agnes Ogilvie). John is still an agricultural labourer.

In 1871 they are both aged 67 and still living in the parish of Tealing at Lumleyden (tollbar). They are now living alone and even at 67 years old, he is still working as an agricultural labourer.

The last census I have for John and Agnes is in 1881. The are still living at Lumleyden in Tealing. John is listed as no longer able for work.
John dies just a year later on 13th May 1882, at age 78. Leaving behind his widow Agnes. His occupation is listed as meal-miller and his address as Lumleyden, Tealing. His cause of death is listed as Chronic Bronchitis which he has suffered from for many years. His death was registed by his nephew’s son, Alexander Ogilvie residing at New Finlarg, Tealing.
